Myola Farmhouse

Description

Myola is the quintessential Queenslander, sitting proudly atop the rolling green hills of Dayboro. Her restoration has been a labour of love, showcasing the beauty of traditional Queensland architecture; charming wrap around verandahs, VJ’s, high ceilings, french doors and hopscotch windows. We have incorporated reclaimed materials, vintage fittings, handmade furniture and a curated range of family heirlooms, art and trinkets found during renovations. The views from the house are spectacular; of mountain ranges and rolling hills, the sparkling lights of Brisbane city and Moreton Island beyond.

Myola was originally built in the 1890's in Wynnum and later moved to the property by train and bullock team. An article in The Brisbane Courier dated 14th February 1918 notes;-

“DAYBORO – About 50 guests were entertained by Mrs. J. Bond at King's Scrub, Dayboro at her new residence Myola. Dancing occupied the main part of the programme, the music being supplied by M.C. and J. Doyle…”

The Space

The large country kitchen features a freestanding Falcon cooker, farmhouse ceramic sink, extended butcher’s block and traditional kitchen table. The kitchen is well stocked with tea, coffee, sugar and oil as well as everything you might need for cooking and dining. This space flows onto the veranda and outdoor dining table for long lunches and family dinners.

There are 3 spacious bedrooms (1x King size bed, 1x Queen size bed, 2x King Single beds), with the beds dressed in quality linen. The main bathroom features a beautiful clawfoot tub, perfect for a relaxing soak. The second bathroom has the cutest walk in shower, with quality personal care products provided.

There is a cozy lounge room with TV, and what used to be the ‘ball room’ is a second spacious lounge room with a lovely wood burner and comfy leather lounges. The 'ball room' can also be converted into a workshop / studio space. The wrap around veranda has various spots perfect for a cup of tea or a beverage whilst admiring the view.

A short walk from the house will lead to you to the fire pit area; toast marshmallows while you enjoy the huge skies and sparking lights of Brisbane city.

The Local Community: Myola is less than an hour from Brisbane, and about 5 minutes to the lovely country town of Dayboro. I know we’re biased, but really – you should visit Dayboro! It’s a vibrant and friendly little town, there are so many great food options as well as lovely artisanal shops and historical information. For such a small town, it really does punch above its weight, with a strong community spirit to boot. The other day we stopped in for a coffee and ended up with a delicious pineapple (grown just down the road) and very nearly a border collie pup. Definitely call in to The Churn Room and The Handmade Closet located in the old butter factory, we can’t say enough good things about this space.
The Farmers Note: You may spot us working on and around the property, feel free to come say hello! Our current focus is vegetation management and regeneration activities, we're 'working towards' Land for Wildlife accreditation.
Things To Do: We recommend taking a slow weekend (or week). Wake up early to watch the sun rise; find your perfect morning yoga spot on the verandah and listen to the bird song. Soak in the vintage clawfoot tub, or enjoy a cup of tea in the ‘green room,’ a corner of the verandah nestled in dancing leaves of the 100 year old fig tree. Cook up a feast in the large country with a kitchen glass of wine in hand, or sit around the fire pit star gazing in the huge night sky. You can even see Brisbane City and Moreton Island from here! On the property there are walking tracks, endless views as well as Terror's Creek to explore.
Places To Explore: If you feel like venturing further afield, take a scenic drive up to Mount Mee calling in to vineyards and farm gates along the way. Best pack your togs and your runners though, because there’s some stunning water holes as well as D’Aguilar National Park to explore. Our favourite adventure is a picnic at The Gantry and a swim at Bulls Falls or Rocky Hole (you may need a 4WD to get to Rocky Hole, depending on road conditions).

Children and pets on request, noting that Myola is a rural property and accordingly you may encounter livestock, creeks, dams, native wildlife and other hazards during your stay. The fencing on the property is stock fencing and will not contain dogs.

We welcome events, elopements and photoshoots, please contact us to discuss (written agreement required, full house rate / additional fees apply). Otherwise, Myola is to be enjoyed by booked guests only, please.

Being somewhat of an elderly lady, Myola has a few ‘heritage’ quirks. Whilst she does not have air conditioning, her hilltop location ensures an ever present breeze, with ceiling fans also installed throughout. The beautiful fig tree adjacent also provides natural temperature regulation. Her timber changes with the weather, causing windows to stick, or gaps in the VJs or floorboards to widen and the like.

We ask guests to be conscious of their water usage, as Myola is on tank water. Whilst Dayboro and surrounds used to be known as ‘God’s Country’ due to its high rainfall, it is not as much, as regular or predictable as it once was.

We are in a rural setting and are lucky enough to spot wildlife regularly, including kangaroos, wallabies, all manner of birds, frogs, snakes and lots of insects.

Phone reception is excellent, but wifi is not available. Take the opportunity to disconnect, relax and recharge!

We find beauty in all (well... most) of her foibles, but… if these quirks sound more like inconveniences to you, this property may not be suitable for your needs.

Ariane & Ben

We’re a family of five trying to slow down and appreciate the simple things in life. We’re very proud to have restored such a beautiful old house, with an emphasis on sustainability and creativity. We’re excited to share with others the feeling of living in a Queenslander – it’s really very lovely. We have many dreams and plans for Myola, involving everything from cattle and regenerative agriculture to bespoke accommodation incorporating sustainable and accessible design. Whilst we are working away at these things, we would love to host you for a weekend, week or longer!
